Let’s be real, I have never been to a wedding and said “wow, this sucks” or “this is pretty boring”… but we all know that car ride home is a littttle different! We have all been to boring weddings and the last thing we want is for that boring wedding to be yours! We don’t want you to have a wedding that will have guest leaving before cake! Or worse, before the first dance! We want you to have a wedding that guest will be talking about for years to come! So today we’re diving into 8 ideas for a wedding reception that doesn’t suck!
We’re going to get a little blunt here, but people, they want to be entertained and engaged with. They don’t want to sit at a table and make small talk all evening!
Photobooths are almost a wedding staple now. At our wedding, our booth was busy all night! So busy that even I (as the bride) had to wait my turn. Photo booths are a great way to get guest up from the table even if dancing isn’t their thing! It is also so fun as a couple to look back at the photos everyone took.
Late night bite!
Guest love late night bites. They allow for a quick snack as well as break up the night a bit. There have been a few that have been fan favorites and those are: mini doughnuts, taco man, in-n-out truck, and an ice cream sandwich truck. Regardless of what tasty night time snack you choose, it is sure to be a hit with your guest–because who doesn’t love food?!?!?
Our last wedding of 2018 had a petting zoo! And man was it a hit. There were way more people petting micropigs and cuddling goats than dancing. It is also a super unique activity that will be sure to make your wedding stand out.
Games are great for cocktail hour but also the reception too! At our wedding, Greg and I had board games in the back for guest to play and it was a hit. Some fun party games could be: cornhole, Jenga, connect four, guess who (but with your guests!!), tic tac toe.
Drinking game area
This one is definitely for the crowd that likes to party, but we have seen both flip cup tables and champagne pong areas during weddings. Watching a grandma play flip cup with a bridesmaid is definitely in one of my top wedding photographer moments!!
A wedding we photographed a few years ago, had the best escort cards! Each card had a question on them and during dinner, everyone would go around the table answering the questions on the card. This fun idea is especially great if you are having guests from different seasons in your life.
When Greg and I first started dating, we went to a high school dance together and at the dance, there was a caricature artist. We had the funniest photo of us drawn and I honestly LOVED it. It is a fun activity for guests and in our opinion right up there with a photo booth!
Who doesn’t love wedding treats??? Having a station for your guests to browse for their dessert is always a fun treat! Everyone gets what they want and you get a beautiful display!
In our experience, the more interactive the activity the better. And weddings where we have seen guests have the most fun, are ones with one or two activities for guests to partake in that are not dancing the night away.
So there you have it! Some tips that are sure to make your reception a hit! And if your guests still don’t have fun after implementing one of these fun activities—then that’s on them and not you!
